Julian
Julian, through song again
But with those chords you love
You’re a leper then, and outcasted
History marks your name
You just tried to live right
Talk to me, through reverie
Crow rise on the moon
Alone again, I love it when
You dance me to the end
You just tried to live right
Julian, you love it when
You feel Her eyes from above
And all you wrote was love
I recently read Matrix by Lauren Groff which reimagines the life of Marie De France and explores power structures at an all female Abbey. I loved the way that fact and fiction interplayed in the lives of historical spiritual figures.
Then I sat down to play guitar and Danielle’s portrait of Julian of Norwich was staring at me… I decided to vaguely write a song to/about her. I went for “lonely church sounds”… and am definitely still searching for some of those melodies :)
While this song is in conversation with Julian, many of the lines can be extrapolated to other figures of history/present day who are sadly punished, reprimanded or ignored despite the best of intentions.
Thanks for listening!
