Country
Darlin’
You said, you could
I guessed, you would
Come by, tonight
And I
Knew the fireflies
Don’t fly this side
Of the country
Take a little
risk you’ll find, a fire
Lights, the blush faced
kind, does this sound right?
My wits and I
minced words tonight
Took me outside
to the country
I’m headed on back on
just the other
side of sunrise
Once mercy’s got
A chokehold on my mind
First signs of dew
Cicada’s blues
Horizon’s new
Despite the moon
In view, you could
I knew, you would
outside of town, outside of time
Cattails and country
I’m headed on back
Just the other
side of sunrise
Once grace makes space
To spotlight those
Alone tonight
Darlin’
You said, you could
I guessed, you would
Come by, tonight
New song demo! I wanted to write something where the rhyme was primary "momentum in the song” and couldn’t get this pulsing rhythm out of my head once I found it.
Upon moving west I learned that fireflies aren’t a thing here (I wonder why?) People from this coast tend to remember the first firefly they saw because they are such a unique/remarkable sight. I thought that deserved a place in a song.
“Just the other side of sunrise” is a reference to the fantastic song Just the Other Side of Nowhere by Kris Kristofferson, which is… country ;)
I’ve always been really drawn to love songs that could be about a partner or something more intangible, depending on who is listening. Paraphrasing Bono, “all of our songs are love songs to a god.”
The play button is under the picture, kinda sneaky on mobile.
