Audubon
Scientists have found that
the common swift can
stay in the air 10
months without ceasing.
Imagine
forgetting the Earth,
trusting. Air ruffling,
nearly on the breath
of a heaven.
A simple little one today… I read this tidbit on Audobon and was shocked. 10 months? THAT’S CRAZY. So, naturally, a poem needed this information… or this information needed a poem.
Regarding the title, I love that the national birding society is called Audobon, especially in the context of this information. It reminds me of the Autobahn and the seemingly limitless sense of freedom that accompanies speed, miles and journeying.
Lastly, perhaps it is the most common things that can perform the most uncommon of feats. After all, to quote Shakespeare’s Juliet, “what’s in a name?”
